Over the better part of the last two years I have been able to watch the slowly unfolding drama of the replacement of our community's water tower. Granted, it's not the most compelling scenery to see a water tower outside one's window, but lately it's been quite interesting! From the plan formulated by the village the new tower arose and has this past several months been supplying our community's water. For the past few months the old tower has stood idly by.
Of course construction had to preceed demoltion in this case, unlike a plot of ground where an old building is razed so that a new one could take shape. Indeed, there seemed to be no rush to remove the old water tower, as I recon a through testing of the new one would be in order prior to dismantling the old. It would be a real shame, even a crisis, if the old one was ripped on only to find that there was a major defect with the new tower!
So, the process has gone slowly; only today I see chunks of the old tower being taken down. It reminds me that we sometimes want to rush decisions, especially if we think they are good ones. Some people "jump to contusions," as I say; they leap into a new situation only to find it's not so ideal, and often painful. We must look foolish to God at times for wanting to rush the process of the development of our lives.
Wisdom teaches that we do things according to God's time, and that we exercise restraint rather than push ahead in a harried fashion. Most often I have found that patience and additional thought yields blessings rather than forging ahead. Of course, the task needs to be done, but should be done with proper analysis and preparation.
I have heard comments to the effect that people spend more time on a new car purchase or planning a vacation than they do spouse selection. It also seems that many people take emotionally driven routes to having children, such as a young girl thinking it would be cool to have a baby out of wedlock, versus a thorough discussion and decision. How much better to plan the new water tower (seeking a godly spouse) before disposing of the old (one's virginity and pre-parenthood). The analogy of the water towers can be applied to any number of life situatinos, but shows that it would benefit us all if we finished construction of our water tower before pulling down the old one.
